Pokemon GO: Explorer Gadget Now Works While You Play
Here's how the updated Explorer Gadget helps while you play Pokémon GO, plus the latest quality-of-life changes to catches, appraisals and Power Spots.

The Explorer Gadget in Pokémon GO is getting an update. Niantic announced on November 2, 2026, that it now works while you're actively playing, not only while the game sits closed in your pocket.
That matters if you want a little extra help catching Pokémon and spinning PokéStops while you explore. The same announcement also summarizes several recent quality-of-life changes. Below, we'll go over how the new Explorer Gadget behavior works and what else has changed.
How the Explorer Gadget Works Now
The Explorer Gadget will continue to automatically attempt to catch Pokémon and spin PokéStops while you explore the real world with Pokémon GO not actively open on your device. The difference is that it will now also aid you while you're playing.
Trainers at level 20 and higher can tap the Explorer Gadget icon at the top right of the map view to activate it. You can also find it in the Key Items section of the Item Bag. Once it's on and you're playing, a pink Poké Ball icon appears over any Pokémon or PokéStop on the map that the Explorer Gadget is attempting to catch or spin.
You aren't locked out of the action, though. You can tap that Pokémon or PokéStop yourself to catch or spin it instead. Keep in mind that once the pink Poké Ball icon appears, you only have a limited window of time to override the Explorer Gadget.
- Summary: Select the Explorer Gadget icon from the map view, or from Key Items in your Item Bag, to see which Pokémon it caught and how many PokéStops it spun.
- Accessory devices: If you use an accessory such as a Pokémon GO Plus +, you don't need to unpair it. The Explorer Gadget and a paired accessory can't be active at the same time, however.
- Exceptions: The Explorer Gadget won't attempt to catch certain encountered Pokémon, such as Pokémon that aren't yet registered in your Pokédex or mighty Pokémon.
If you're new to the gadget, Niantic points to its Support article "What is the Explorer Gadget?" for the basics.
Other Gameplay and Quality-of-Life Updates
The team also shared a summary of adjustments that have recently rolled out:
- Updated Catch Summary: after a catch, you see improved visuals that make rewards and catch bonuses clearer.
- Dedicated Appraise Button: a new button above the Additional Options button on a Pokémon's summary page gives you quicker access to appraisal information.
- Power Spot Encounters: visiting a Power Spot, or placing a Pokémon at one after winning a Max Battle, no longer triggers special wild encounters around the Power Spot. The change is meant to make wild encounters more consistent for all players.
- Encounter Ring Indicators: the ring around wild Pokémon attracted by Lure Modules, or encountered while exploring a Route, has been updated.
- PokéStop Color Saturation: spun PokéStops now contrast more clearly with unspun ones.
- Visual Effects: the effects around Pokémon attracted by the Mystery Box or Coin Bag have been updated.
