Helldivers 2, the latest game from Arrowhead Game Studios, is quickly becoming one of the most popular titles of 2024. Not only is it one of the most played titles on Steam, but it also seems like there is a huge community element to how the story of the game is going to play out in the coming months.

The main objective of the game is to protect 'Super Earth' while pushing back the two invading factions, which are the Terminids and Automatons. Players have noticed that after completing missions, they are actually contributing to the Liberation percentage that is displayed on each individual planet. So is this an illusion or are we actually preventing the invasion together as a community? Here is everything we know so far about the Liberation mechanic in Helldivers 2.

How Does the Liberation Percentage Work in Helldivers 2?

As you might have noticed from completing missions in Helldivers 2, once you have successfully finished an Operation, you will be able to see your squad's impact on the current planet's liberation percentage. This does work, and it's not just an illusion created by the developers.

As you can see on the Galactic map, the different planets which have Major Order weekly missions attached to them are the ones that have their liberation percentage go up. We also saw a significant increase in the Liberation of the planets in the Automaton sector once the Personal Order daily mission came up. Once planets are liberated, new sections of the map become available, pushing the enemies away from Super Earth.

Liberating planets is influenced by the players, with successful missions increasing the Liberation meter and mission failure doing the opposite. I would also assume that the developers are going to be influencing these numbers once the popularity of the game goes down, as it will be quite stale to run the same planet over and over again.

This also begs the question: What happens if the enemy factions reach Super Earth, or are pushed back from the galaxy? While we do not have information on how this is going to work in Helldivers 2, the previous installment of the series did have an end screen for winning and losing, based on the performance of the player base. Once the players won or lost, the map was restarted, and another war began.

It was like a global campaign that relied on the players pushing back against the invasion, picking and choosing which battles are worth fighting for. We assume that there is a similar system in play in this game as well, but we will only learn more once any of these events do happen in-game.

That is everything we know so far about how the global campaign and the Liberation mechanics work in Helldivers 2. A lot of questions are going to be answered once players manage to push back one of the factions or Super Earth is lost.
