Path of Exile: Necropolis 3.24 - Atlas Strategies: Legion

Path of Exile’s endgame can be a bit tricky to figure out. Depending on your preferred gameplay, and your character build, there can be an overwhelming amount of choices on how to play. In this article, we’ll look at the Legion mechanic, and gauge how easy it is to get into, how cheap it is to get started, and how much currency you can start making with a small investment.

How Does 'Legion' Work in Path of Exile?

Legions are ancient armies frozen in the midst of battle. They can be encountered by touching a Timeless Monolith, which breaks out the Legions and gives the player a window of time to defeat them.

Interacting with a Monolith will reveal a battle between two Legions that is frozen in time. During this phase, the enemies can be unfrozen. A timer will start once the Monolith is activated. The timer can range from 14 to 20 seconds, with a longer timer on low-level zones. Once the timer runs out, all the enemies that had their health depleted will become unfrozen and start attacking. Enemies that didn't have their health depleted will disappear.

Some Legion enemies have a symbol above their heads, indicating what kind of reward they drop. Chests and War Hoards can also spawn, which can be destroyed and opened after the timer runs out. Destroying a Chest or War Hoard will free all nearby enemies without symbols in the radius. Rarely, a General of the Legion can spawn.

Path of Exile: How to Farm Legion

Currently, the best way to run Legion in Path of Exile is to do Dunes maps, as they have the best layout for the mechanic. You’ll need a good clearing build for the Legion mechanic, as it relies on unfreezing as many monsters as possible before the time runs out and then killing them.

A cheap and effective way to farm Legion is to use 3 regular Legion Scarabs, for the extra Legions they provide, as well as a Legion Scarab of Officers since it provides 5 extra Officers per Legion. Last but not least, you should also add an extra Legion through your map device. You can just Chisel and Alchemy orb the maps before running them.

Here are some useful tips for Legions:

1. Make sure to clear the area around the Legion first, as you might get overwhelmed if the regular monsters mix in with the Legion.
2. If your build isn’t fast enough, make sure to first unfreeze the Legion monsters that provide the type of reward you want the most.
3. In most cases, rarer spawns will spawn further away from the Monolith, and Generals will always spawn in the far rear. Therefore, it's advised to move deep into a formation as quickly as possible if you are looking for rare spawns.
4. If a General spawns, the monolith will display a marker on the bottom in the direction of the General, so check the monolith to see if a general spawned.

How to Set Up Your Atlas for Legion in Path of Exile

Setting up your Atlas to farm Legion shouldn’t be too hard. You’ll need to grab most Legion nodes on the tree. Make sure to avoid the Timeless Conflict node, since it just complicates the Legion mechanic but provides no extra rewards. With all the points that are left, you can go for some Scarab drop chance, as those are expensive in the current Necropolis League, as well as some map drop chance, and increased effect of map modifiers.
